31 Day Challenge and the first Inspired By prompt falling on Day 22 is Inspired By A Song – Rubber Band, Bowie. David Bowie. I thought I would pick something random and obscure, so it fits the bill there. And to celebrate 50 years of David Bowie. The track itself was a bit of a flop, but was one on the demo that scored him a record deal. It is from rather early in his career, 1966, and this deal was the one that saw his first album David Bowie released.
You may or may not have heard of it; I wasn’t joking when I mentioned it was a quite obscure choice, so I have included the video clip and lyrics below. For now though lets look at this music inspired mani! I decided to take it quite literally for a bit of fast fun.
So indeed there are actual rubber bands involved. If you are wondering what the heck that 3D ‘stuff’ is here. There’s some tea and scones stamped on the pinkie (see the lyrics if you’re a little ‘WTF?’). As well as a ‘stiffly waxed moustache’ also mentioned, on the index – but bear in mind there ain’t enough nail real estate to make it 1 foot long! And lastly in amongst the belt of rubber bands, the ring finger has David Bowie’s famous blue-red lightning bolt – a primary feature of his Aladdin Sane persona. (Which did come a little later, but is something associated with his recognition as an artist.) The blue slightly melded with the red, but I was too impatient to wait until it fully dried as I have other things to chase up.
This is the rather ordinary Rubber Band film clip, with the “haven’t quite hit the big-time yet” budget:
These are the lyrics if you are interested:
Rubber Band
There’s a rubber band that plays tunes out of tune
In the library garden Sunday afternoon
While a little chappie waves a golden wand
Rubber Band
In 1910 I was so handsome and so strong
My moustache was stiffly waxed and one foot long
And I loved a girl while you played teatime tunes
Dear Rubber Band, you’re playing my tune out of tune, oh
Rubber Band
Won’t you play a haunting theme again to me
While I eat my scones and drink my cup of tea
The sun is warm but it’s a lonely afternoon
Oh, play that theme
Rubber Band
How I wish that I could join your Rubber Band
We could play in lively parks throughout the land
And one Sunday afternoon, I’d find my love
Rubber Band,
In the ’14-’18 war I went to sea
Thought my Sunday love was waiting home for me
And now she’s married to the leader of your band, oh
I hope you break your baton

And lastly, suss out this ah-mazing animated GIF of David Bowie through the ages. Helen Green is the creative mind responsible for this awesome! And as stated by HuffPo “chronicles every single one of Bowie’s iconic looks from 1964 to 2014. There are mullets, there are eye patches, there are baby scarves, there are fake moles, there are perms. There are so many high cheek bones.”
Whilst this isn’t my favourite challenge category, I do look forward to seeing all your interpretations for the Inspired By prompts.
* several rubber bands may have been harmed in the making of this mani, but the rest will eventually snap out of it. (…OK I’ll stop)

I don’t know this song (I was never very into David Bowie) but I LOVE your nails, I love when someone does something with their nails that I’ve never seen before 😀
Did you know that they make actual David Bowie water decals? I can’t remember where I first saw them, but when I tried googling it just now there are actually multiple results 😀
(also, since this is my third time attempting to post a comment, I thought I’d give you a fair heads up: WordPress is giving me troulbe when I attempt to comment- it says I need to enable cookies and Javascript, both of which are already enabled in this browser. I wonder if WordPress is causing trouble for all chrome users and you’re not getting as many comments as you should because of it?)

Thank you Leah! 😀 I wanted to do something a little artsy because he is a bit more eclectic.
Ooh now you mention it, I think I have seen Bowie inspired decals before, but that’s a great idea. I should have a look for some just for kicks.Oh really? Dang, sorry you were having issues. Did you try 3 times to post a comment to this post or was it others as well? That is both odd and annoying.I have been having some weirdness with Chrome lately too (not letting me select things, lately some blog’s pages refuse to scroll down) so I’m wondering if it is browser-update related. Thanks a lot for letting me know! I’ll do some testing when I get a chance a bit later to see if there are some conflicts just in case. ♥
