31DC2015 Day 25: Fashion – Mara Hoffman

I wanted to go all out with a nice bold print for Day 25’s Fashion prompt in the 31 Day Challenge. So I chose a Mara Hoffman print to replicate. There were so many to choose from, but I settled on one after much deliberation.

I chose this New York fashion designer because I love her prints. This Bohemian style is well-suited to free-hand painting which I am aiming to do more of in this final leg of the challenge. She has nice bold colours and draws inspirations from many cool sources, and her textiles look as great in furnishings as they do in swimwear. Plus it makes me want to go on a vacation just looking at it, and I won’t be getting one of those for a while yet, so it’s the next best thing.

I’ve used a series of polishes and free-handed the feathers on top. It’s close enough. A little harder to replicate a print perfectly on the nails sometimes, but illustrating it by hand is part of the fun and also why I chose something more organic than a straight up geometric. There’s also a dried leaf on the index finger. I went for two simple golden lines on the pinky for ease.

On autopilot I used one of the feather’s green polishes as the base on the other nails instead of a burnt orange, but there was no chance in hell was I going to start again, so you’ll have to excuse that little boo boo.

Here is the Ibis print textile this is taken from:

I’m pretty happy with how they turned out given the rush, but wish I’d remembered the orange base. *facepalm* Now to sort out something for tomorrow…
